ECT2’s Squad of Experts: Remediating PFAS Before Most People Knew How to Spell it

Aug. 1, 2024

ECT2 is the next-generation treatment technology division of Montrose Environmental Group (NYSE: MEG). We find new ways to handle challenging contamination problems. Our expertise is based on some of the most complex, field-tested implementations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. To date, we have successfully removed all short-chain and long-chain compounds targeted by our clients. With over 9 billion gallons of PFAS-impacted water treated since 2016, we know a thing or two about the best approaches to remove PFAS from various types of water, including groundwater, wastewater, and drinking water.

PFAS Superheroes
Our squad of PFAS experts come from varied backgrounds but are focused on one goal: removing PFAS from the environment as sustainably and efficiently as possible. With expert engineers and a dedicated in-house Research & Development lab, we continue to improve our treatment goals and learn from our experiences so we can stay in front of the competition in PFAS treatment technology.  Tough challenges demand smart solutions, and we have been able to apply them to the aviation industry, industrial manufacturing, Defense, solid waste, textiles and more. Our R&D team always focuses on the end game, we’re solving real problems for early adopters that have a need. We’re all in on piloting to demonstrate the technology at a convincing scale and refer to this as our own “no fall zone”.

Technology Agnostic
ECT2 is well positioned with the patented technologies that we bring to the table, but we know that PFAS treatment isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Our team is committed to looking broadly at all the options that are available and helping guide our clients to finding the best technology for their unique job. We provide options that can best solve the various problems our clients are facing. While we have groundbreaking, innovative technologies, we bring a lot of flexibility to how we approach problems for clients to provide a thorough, and long-lasting solution.
From treating billions of litres of drinking water in the Town of Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia to removing very difficult short-chain compounds and co-contaminants from the wastewater streams of some of the biggest industrial manufacturers in the United States, we are applying our real-world experience with our knowledge of which technology is right for the job. Often, we play the role of technology provider, consultant, and operators on the projects and we’re focused on being solutions-driven to meeting the challenges of our clients.

The ECT2 Difference
At ECT2, we combine advanced treatment technology, unmatched real-world experience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence to deliver impressive results. We have the only patented regenerable ion exchange resin system for PFAS – which is a sustainable, industrial-strength solution for PFAS remediation that reuses treatment media and substantially reduces waste. Our team members are dedicated and innovative, and they put the will and dedication behind great ideas to prove them in the world and commercialize them for our clients. We offer a fully array of services dedicated to understanding the managing the impacts of contaminants, including research and development, design and engineering, installation and construction management, start-up and commissioning, and operations and maintenance. Our expertise stems from some of the most complex, field-tested implementations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. With 17 patents on the treatment of emerging compounds (and 33 more under review), we’ve installed or have under construction over 350 PFAS systems worldwide, and we’re generating 80% less waste through our processes.

Real World Application

Drinking Water Project
Our team in Australia partnered with Power & Water Corporation to ensure the Katherine community had a reliable drinking water source in the short and long-term. How did they do it?

The initial interim treatment system required a rapid response to fabricate, deploy, and startup due to the amount of PFAS identified in the water supply. PFAS removal was completed by utilizing ECT2’s proprietary SORBIX™ regenerable ion exchange (IEX) resins and met our client’s goal of 1 megalitre per day (ML/d). Later, our client engaged ECT2 to provide a long-term solution that had the capacity to process 10 ML/d. This plant was the first of its kind in Australia and continues to comfortably exceed the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines as is well placed to satisfy any potential future tightening of these guidelines, as the ability to regenerate the SORBIX resins future proofs the plant operation.

The interim system treated 1 ML/day and supplied the area with water from October 2017 until the permanent plant was in place. The permanent plant, commissioned in November 2023, was constructed, tested, and fully operational by March 2024. To date, over 2.3 billion litres of water has been treated to provide safe drinking water for the Town of Katherine.

Industrial Wastewater Project
A textile manufacturing company in the southeastern United States produced coated textiles using PFAS, resulting in 100 million gallons of PFAS-laden wastewater being discharged into on-site, unlined wastewater lagoons. ECT2 was engaged to treat this contaminated wastewater and reduce PFOS and PFOA levels below 70 ppt before discharging the treated water into a nearby river.

The complex water chemistry along with the facility's remote location posed significant challenges. Additionally, active organisms in the lagoons added further complications with the pretreatment strategy. However, our PFAS experts’ focus on commissioning, startup, and remote support led to a successful deployment and remediation strategy.

The system utilized a pretreatment process with Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to remove co-contaminants and was followed by our SORBIX™ PURE Ion Exchange Resin (IEX), which was able to optimize flow and treatment efficiency, ensuring compliance with the state-mandated discharge goals of 70 ppt for all 100 million treated gallons.

The SORBIX™ PURE ion exchange resin features a dual mechanism of adsorption, allowing for rapid PFAS removal with minimal waste generation. At ECT2, we are continuing to work with textile firms in the southeast, emphasizing sustainability and innovative solutions for environmental challenges.
