Ozone is a powerful water treatment tool that can bridge the widening gap between stringent treated water requirements and decreasing incoming water quality. To achieve potable reuse water quality requirements, SUEZ Oxyblue™, a combination of ozonia® ozone and biofiltration, has emerged as an attractive alternative to reverse osmosis by providing high quality water at a significantly reduced life-cycle cost. One advantage of ozone-based solutions is driven by treating the full water flow directly, without segmenting or concentrating a separate waste stream. Ozone solutions do not generate a brine that requires additional, and often costly, treatment.
In wastewater applications, ozone is effective at disinfection and eliminating target contaminants. Long-term operation of full-scale ozone systems has demonstrated the removal of pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, hormones, and pesticides.
Ozone also improves performance of other technologies. After secondary or tertiary treatment, ozone and biofiltration work synergistically with each other. Ozone breaks down trace organics, increasing their bioavailability for enhanced removal during biofiltration. The combination provides lower costs and improves target contaminant removal efficiencies, with results often greater than 90 percent. This treatment process is also flexible as the ozone dosage can be varied to match the incoming water quantity and quality.
Ozone is also used to remove trace contaminants, directly as well as in combination with other technologies to reduce cost. WW
