PARSIPPANY, NJ, Dec. 12, 2006 - The Hydraulic Institute (HI) announced today that it will co-sponsor a one-day course with the Fluid Sealing Association (FSA) entitled, "Fundamentals of Mechanical Seals - Basics" at the 23rd International Pump Users Symposium, presented by the Texas A&M Turbomachinary Lab in Houston, TX.

The course is designed to give the attendee the necessary information to select and apply mechanical seals in various applications. The four presenters are Michael Huebner of Flowserve, Henri Azibert of A.W. Chesterton Co., Eric Vanhie of EagleBurgmann Seals, and Robert Goodenberger of John Crane Inc. The course will focus on the effects of equipment types and pump operation on the performance of seals, including the selection and performance of piping plans and support systems. Attendees will also be introduced to failure analysis techniques and life cycle costing implications. Because mechanical seals are a critical component in the operation and reliability of centrifugal pumps, engineers, maintenance and operational personnel will gain valuable insight on how their systems can function more efficiently and reliably with their proper use.

All students will receive a copy of HI's "Mechanical Seals for Pumps: Application Guidelines" -- a $195 value -- by attending this course. The 300-page comprehensive and authoritative reference book provides readers with useful and current pump mechanical seal knowledge. Scheduled for release in January 2007, "Mechanical Seals for Pumps: Application Guidelines" is packed with user-friendly descriptions and explanations, tables, and photographs that rotating equipment OEMs, EPC professionals, plant engineers, and maintenance and reliability specialists need to ensure system reliability and increase Mean Time Between Repairs (MTBR).

Copies will be provided to each student on the day of the course and can also be purchased from the e-store on the Hydraulic Institute website at www.Pumps.org.

Registration for "Fundamentals of Mechanical Seals - Basics" is now open and forms are available on both the Hydraulic Institute and Texas A&M Turbomachinary Laboratory websites. For more information on registration for short courses and the 23rd International Pump Users Symposium, visit www.Pumps.org.

The 89-year old Hydraulic Institute, the largest association of pump producers in North America, is a global authority on pumps and pumping systems. Information on the Hydraulic Institute, its services, standards, publications and meetings, can be found on the HI websites at www.Pumps.organd www.PumpLearning.org, and the new energy-savings and life cycle cost focused site, www.PumpSystemsMatter.org.
