RICHMOND, BC, Oct. 28, 2002 -- The City of Long Beach, Calif., has joined the list of MDSI customers looking to standardize mobile workforce management solutions enterprise-wide.

Mobile Data Solutions Inc. (MDSI), a provider of mobile workforce management solutions, has agreed to extend deployment of Advantex at the City of Long Beach, California to include environmental services crews, such as refuse collectors, street sweepers and parking control officers.

The City of Long Beach has been using MDSI's solutions to manage mobile workers in their Gas Service department since 1993. A strong return on investment from that deployment encouraged the City to roll out Advantex to their environmental services crews, as well.

According to Dan Howard, Manager, Customer Service Bureau for the City of Long Beach, "We are interested in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of all our services. Our highly positive experience with Advantex in the Gas Service group convinced us that we could use the solution to drive improvements elsewhere; we will begin by adding our environmental services team."

In other recently announced contracts, MDSI customers have taken advantage of Advantex's breadth of capabilities to roll the solution out to multiple workforces, for a more enterprise-wide view of mobile workforce management.

For example, NiSource Inc.'s Energy Distribution Group is taking advantage of Advantex's ability to manage long-duration, multiple task projects by adding plant and construction workforces to their deployment. The City of Tacoma, a new MDSI customer, is rolling out Advantex to multiple business units right from the start, including power, water, cable TV, sanitary sewer, surface water and solid waste utilities, as well as general government.

MDSI's President, CEO and Chairman, Erik Dysthe, stated, "Our customers have typically deployed Advantex initially in their most mission critical field operations, such as service installation and repair groups. Because Advantex has such a quick and compelling return on investment, ultimately, it makes sense to use the solution for all mobile work crews. We are pleased that we can add the City of Long Beach to a growing list of customers that share this view."

Advantex intelligently schedules service requests and, using complex business rules, assigns them to the best available mobile resource. The solution dispatches work order details to mobile resources who use Advantex to process their work throughout the day, and send status updates and order completion information back to the office-all wirelessly, in real time.

For the City of Long Beach, Advantex will operate over a public CDPD network and a private Motorola network, and will replace primarily voice- and paper-based systems for dispatching work orders and managing mobile workers.
