Smart Water Meters Make a Difference

Feb. 6, 2020
Smarter water meters are the “cash register” of the water metering industry, adding value to the total metering system, driving revenues, and helping to ensure the reliability of the decision-making information provided by the metering software.

Data management, smart water solutions, and infrastructure continue to be top of mind for water utilities across the country as they work to address challenges facing the industry, such as growing demand, increasing water stress, rising energy prices, and aging water systems. Utilities are finding that smarter water infrastructure is critical to “account for every drop and turn water into revenue through enhanced leak detection and unparalleled data acquisition,” according to MarketWatch’s 2019 Smart Water Meter Market report.

Although some utilities may consider the water meter to be a commodity and not as essential as meter reading technologies, investing in highly accurate, long-lasting meters matters. Smarter water meters — the “cash register” of the water metering industry — add value to the total metering system, driving revenues and helping to ensure the reliability of the decision-making information provided by the metering software.

E-Series® Ultrasonic meters from Badger Meter are the company’s latest water meter evolution in its 114-year history. Available in sizes ranging from 5/8” to 4”, E-Series Ultrasonic meters provide high measurement accuracy and long-term reliability as well as increased performance to maximize revenue over the life of the meter. They are applicable for potable, reclaimed, residential, commercial and industrial, and fire service applications.

Unlike mechanical meters, ultrasonic meters use high-frequency sound waves to measure flows, helping improve reliability and extend low flow accuracy. Within each meter, electronic transducers send high-frequency sound signals consecutively, in forward and reverse directions. Then, an on-board processor turns this data into actionable information for the water utility. E-Series Ultrasonic meters are accurate to 1.5 percent over the normal operating range of the meter and 3 percent at extended low flows.

Smart alarms reported through Badger Meter’s ORION® Cellular LTE-M and LTE endpoints and BEACON® Advanced Metering Analytics (AMA) solution provide early detection for flow, temperature, and pressure disturbances to help utilities proactively manage water systems faster and more efficiently. This proactive water management capability enables efficiencies, water conservation, and cost savings. E-Series Ultrasonic meters are user friendly with an easy-to-read, high-resolution LCD display and provide meter data and alarms to help utilities become more efficient, prevent unauthorized use, and decrease non-revenue water. The meters are submersible in water, which allows for effective use in challenging environments.

Because ultrasonic meters use electronic sound signals, they have no moving parts, which virtually eliminates mechanical wear. The simplified solid-state meter body protects against tampering. For water utilities, the key to effective decision-making analytics is the accuracy of the water meter that obtains usage data. With its wide range of metering solutions, Badger Meter, through its E-Series Ultrasonic meters has proven its reliability and longevity for water utilities across the country year after year. WW

Badger Meter is an innovator in flow measurement, control and communications solutions, serving water utilities, municipalities, and commercial and industrial customers worldwide. To learn more about E-Series Ultrasonic meters, visit badgermeter.com/difference.
