The large Municipal Utility Authority in southern N.J. recently needed to rehab four, 30+ year old digesters The original coating system had completely deteriorated, resulting in a microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) attack with up to 1/2” of concrete substrate loss. The digester walls would need to be resurfaced to bring the structures back to their original dimensions and then coated with a corrosion resistant lining to provide a smooth cleanable surface.
Sauereisen representatives in New Jersey recommended the Restokrete Substrate Resurfacer F-121 at a minimum 1/2” thickness to rebuild the walls. The F-121 was applied by wet shotcrete and then troweled and broom finished to provide a profile to accept the 125 mil lining of Sauereisen SewerGard 210XHB.
To apply the Sauereisen coating, Zack Painting from Fords, N.J., first used a 40,000 psi ultra-high-pressure water jetting to remove the original coating and loose and deteriorated concrete, resulting in a clean, solid substrate with a CSP 6 surface profile.
Completion of the installation of the Sauereisen lining system will ensure that the four digesters are fully protected from corrosion and erosion and that protection will add many years of reliable service and peace of mind for this municipality. WW
