• UL approves Capstone microturbines for renewable energy, national grid hookup -- CHATSWORTH, CA, March 21, 2006 -- Capstone Turbine, a leading manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced that its 30- and 65-kilowatt renewable energy systems are the first generators to be classified by Underwriters Laboratories to the UL2200 standards for Stationary Engine Generators, under the new category of Engine Generators Fueled by Biogas or Raw Natural Gas. Additionally, these products have been simultaneously listed to UL1741, the standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use With Distributed Energy Resources. UL1741, which references IEEE 1547 and IEEE 1547.1, is being accepted as the U.S. national utility grid interconnection standard. In 2001, Capstone MicroTurbine® systems were the first non-photovoltaic generator to be listed to the UL1741 interconnection safety and operations standard. Both announcements will be of particular interest to wastewater treatment facilities looking to recycle byproducts to save on energy costs...
• USFilter posts two new case studies on biosolids, perchlorate treatment -- WARRENDALE, PA, March 21, 2006 -- USFilter, a unit of Siemens Water Technologies, has posted two new case studies to its website:
-- "One rotary sludge dryer benefits many WWTPs: Saves hauling costs, helps comply with biosolids regulations" -- The Clearwater Cogeneration Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Corona, CA, is using a Sernagiotto directly heated sludge dryer from the Water Technologies division of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) to process 8 million gallons per day of combined municipal and industrial hydraulic influent, as well as sludge, from the city's three other WWTPs. Since coming online four months ago, the dryer system has saved the Clearwater cogen plant considerable wet cake hauling costs and helped it meet USEPA's strict 40 CFR Part 503 regulation. The dryer system is part of a combined system that produces electricity and dry, dewatered biosolids by using the hot exhaust gas to recover energy from the combined-cycle cogeneration turbine. This is the first Sernagiotto dryer installation in the U.S...
-- "Perchlorate discovery leads to full-scale contaminant removal system in Massachusetts" -- USFilter Environmental Services, a part of Siemens Water Technologies, was selected by Aquarion Water Co. of Massachusetts to provide a full-scale perchlorate removal ion exchange system. Although used extensively in other parts of the country, this is the first such system to be installed in the eastern United States. The Siemens solution will enable Aquarion to meet the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) perchlorate guidelines for drinking water and eliminate the requirement to purchase supplemental water from the neighboring city of Worcester...
