What does smart water look like today across the water sectors? An episode of the podcast Talking Under Water, hosted by the editors of WaterWorld, Wastewater Digest and Stormwater Solutions, dives further into smart water trends in the industry.
In this episode, Stormwater Solutions editor-in-chief Katie Johns talks with Colby Manwaring, senior advisor for Autodesk and former CEO for Innovyze, about smart solutions in the water sector — from cybersecurity to machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
The applications of modern AI solutions, for example, is already beginning the shape the water industry.
“It’s a little unclear what the best and highest use of AI might be for the water industry, but it definitely plays into our ability to quickly make decisions or recommend actions to increase the performance of water infrastructure, or to safeguard water infrastructure, and on and on,” said Manwaring. “So AI is definitely in the water industry.”
In the podcast, Manwaring notes that machine learning is being employed across all water sectors. In the drinking water sector, datasets fed into machine learning solutions help to predict water demand. In the wastewater sector, machine learning estimates appropriate chemical dosing. Machine learning is also helping to project flooding probabilities for the stormwater sector.
