Pulley alignment tool
The Dotline® Laser from Ludeca combines V-belt pulley alignment with laser leveling in a single hand-held, permanently calibrated tool. The lightweight, waterproof leveler can be attached magnetically to either the outside or inside of a pulley. Three AAA batteries project a fanned laser onto three magnetic targets placed on the opposite pulley, allowing the user to view the alignment condition. The tool's laser can also be switched to a bright red dot for distance leveling.

Computerized respirometer
The N-Con AV4R Respirometer measures and records the oxygen consumption of solid or liquid bacterial cultures. As the bacteria consume oxygen, the carbon dioxide is evolved and removed by an alkali scrubber. A vacuum is formed and that triggers the system to provide calibrated pulses of oxygen to the reactor headspace. A computer senses, controls and records oxygen delivery. Each respirometer consists of four reactors. Individual tests may be started and stopped independently of the others. Up to six four-place respirometers can be operated by one computer.

Ground-loop protection
A new Ground Loop Interrupt electrode is available from Sensorex. An electrical ground loop problem exists when electrical current flows through the reference side of a combination pH electrode causing inaccurate readings or a short electrode service life. The Ground Loop Interrupt electrode combats these problems by using a solution ground and internal battery-powered ground loop interrupt preamp circuit. The battery has an estimated three-year service life. An additional benefit to this design is the ability to use cable runs up to 1200 feet without signal degradation. This electrode also incorporates the company's self-cleaning technology.

Molecular virology
Analytical Services Inc. (ASI), an environmental microbiology laboratory, now offers Integrated Cell Culture/Polymerase Chain Reaction (ICC/PCR) for the detection of enteric viruses in water and wastewater. ICC/PCR is a highly sensitive, rapid technique which detects the enteroviruses, (poliovirus, echovirus, coxsackie virus) adenoviruses 40 and 41, astrovirus, rotavirus and hepatitis A virus (HAV). ASI confirms infectivity of any recovered viruses if desired. Viruses detected most likely are indicative of human fecal contamination. In contrast to traditional cell culture techniques where the filtering of a large volume of water is required, ICC/PCR requires only a four to 10 liter grab sample for raw water analysis.

Dissolved sulfide monitor
ATI's new series A15/81 dissolved sulfide monitor provides an on-line instrument for continuously measuring even very low levels of dissolved hydrogen sulfide in water or wastewater. Measurements range from a few ppb to 20 ppm, with standard outputs and alarms that can be used to control chemical feed systems or to provide alarms. The unit measures dissolved sulfide using a vapor phase analytical system that air strips the sulfides into the vapor space above a reactor. The sensor never contacts the sample, and unlike selective ion electrode systems, the A15/81 uses a polarographic sensor to generate a linear signal proportional to the hydrogen sulfide concentration.
