FORT WASHINGTON, PA, Sept. 16, 2008 -- The Department of Public Works for Kent County Levy Court (Dover, Del.) has selected Severn Trent Services' MicroDynamics™ ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system for use at the award winning Kent County Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. The MicroDynamics microwave UV technology was successfully piloted at the Kent County facility prior to selection, consistently treating wastewater well below the limit for Enterococcus at varying flow rates.

As a result of its Environmental Health and Safety Management System (EHS-MS) and backed by the Kent County Levy Court, the Department of Public Works selected ultraviolet disinfection to replace chlorination at the site. This decision will result in reduced chemical usage, simplified regulatory compliance issues, and improved employee and community safety. The facility won the 2007 US EPA Clean Water Act Recognition Award for Operational Excellence and the 2008 US EPA Region III Environmental Excellence Award for its forward thinking environmental efforts.

The wastewater treatment plant is an advanced secondary waste treatment facility that receives wastewater from Kent County, southern portions of New Castle County and northern portions of Sussex County, Del. The facility treats an average of 12 million gallons per day (MGD) with a peak treatment capacity of 18 MGD, and it is permitted for Enterococcus at 33.0 colonies/100 milliliter (ml). Treated wastewater is discharged to a tributary of the Murderkill River, part of the Delaware River basin.

"UV disinfection is proven to be a highly effective treatment method. With a three-year lamp life guarantee, the MicroDynamics system offered the lowest overall operational costs and maintenance requirements of any UV technology we evaluated," stated Director of Public Works Hans Medlarz.

Medlarz added, "The further appeal of the innovative MicroDynamics technology was the improved reliability it offered compared to traditional UV systems and lamps. The system's unlimited on/off capability was perfect for our peak treatment capacity needs. And the safety of the system's electrodeless lamps featuring no electrical connections in the water just couldn't be matched. "

The UV system should be installed and operational by the spring of 2009.

Severn Trent Services, with global headquarters in Fort Washington, Pa., USA, is a leading supplier of water and wastewater solutions.
