Hangtown Creek Water Reclamation Facility

CAMERON PARK, CA, March 2, 2010 -- The City of Placerville's Hangtown Creek Water Reclamation Facility has won awards from three engineering associations -- the Wastewater Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)-California, an award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and the 2009 Engineering Achievement Award from the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Sacramento Branch.

Owen Psomas was the lead engineer on the $45 million project, which converted a wastewater treatment plant into a water reclamation facility in order to meet stringent new effluent discharge standards while also expanding capacity.

A number of key engineering design issues made the project extremely challenging. The existing treatment plant was located on a very small seven-acre site. The plant had to be kept in service, meeting discharge standards, throughout the nearly three-year construction period.

Owen Psomas Senior Vice President Webster J. Owen accepted the CWEA award at the Annual Awards Banquet held on January 15, 2010. He also accepted the ASCE award at the Annual California Awards Dinner on February 9, 2010.
