WASHINGTON, DC, DEC 6, 2017 -- The US Water Alliance has partnered with the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation and Water Research Foundation to establish the National Blue Ribbon Commission for Onsite Non-potable Water Systems to progress innovative solutions for One Water management. Recently. the Commission released a new set of resources for developing and implementing regulations for water systems that collect, treat, and reuse non-potable water within a building or at the local scale.
The success of onsite non-potable water systems (ONWS) depends on strong collaboration between water and wastewater utilities and public health agencies to ensure projects protect public health and meet water quality standards. Across the country, there is growing interest in incorporating onsite non-potable water systems into broader water management practices. Yet, a lack of public health-based state or national standards, streamlined permitting processes, and regulatory guidance has been a barrier to implementation.
The guidebook and supporting resources released today establish a consistent national approach to inform the regulation and management of ONWS while maintaining flexibility to meet local context. These new resources offer a concrete and actionable framework based on best-in-class science and research that states and local municipalities can use for creating, regulating, and managing ONWS projects and programs.
