Centrisys to provide sewage sludge thickeners for Manchester, NH, solids train project

Feb. 19, 2021
Sewage sludge thickeners will be employed for the Department of Public Works–Environmental Protection Division's Solids Train Project.

KENOSHA, WI -- Centrisys Corporation, a leading North American manufacturer of decanter and thickening centrifuges and dewatering systems, announced today that it has secured an order from the City of Manchester, New Hampshire for the Department of Public Works–Environmental Protection Division's Solids Train Project. With plant upgrade design and support provided by the environmental engineering firm, Wright-Pierce, the order placed with Centrisys consists of three THK350 Sewage Sludge Thickeners and upgrades to all existing decanter centrifuge control panels. All units will be designed, engineered, and built in the United States, with centrifuge shipment expected in November 2021.

"In 2007, the Centrisys team was responsible for the manufacturing and installation of three CS21-4HC decanter centrifuges for the Manchester Dewatering Centrifuge Project, which was completed 12 months ahead of schedule and enabled the city to save $469,000 in the first year," said Michael Kopper, chief executive officer and founder of Centrisys. "We are honored to be selected to fulfill an order of such magnitude again and build on our longstanding relationship with the City of Manchester. I am confident that the planned enhancements included in the Solids Train Project will produce positive results, not unlike our previous installation."

The Centrisys THK350 Sewage Sludge Thickeners will eliminate the release of phosphorous (P). The captured phosphorous will be maintained in the biosolids; this plays a critical role in meeting the city's P effluent permit. Other features include:

  • A maximum feed flow rate of 320 GPM without polymer, 500 GPM with polymer
  • 21 in (.53 m) bowl diameter
  • 75-90 HP standard total installed
  • 4-7-percent average TS without polymer, 5-10-percent with polymer
  • Proprietary hydro-pneumatic control of cake solids, internal polymer injection system, and tungsten carbide wear plows for grit and trash
Manchester's Solids Train Project required Centrisys to back-up projections with a full-scale pilot test. After conducting a week-long pilot, Manchester achieved the desired goal of 4-percent TS without polymer.

"It is likely the exceptional performance of the full-scale pilot test in conjunction with Centrisys' reputation for engineering quality equipment made the THK350 Sludge Thickeners the definitive choice for this project," said Brian Boyson, president of Boyson and Associates, the Centrisys manufacturer's representative. "This first of its kind installation for the state of New Hampshire is an example of how innovative equipment can solve environmental challenges."

The City of Manchester's Environmental Protection District provides services for collecting and treating wastewater for all of Manchester and portions of Bedford, Goffstown, and Londonderry. The District functions as an enterprise and is fully supported by user fees and grants. The installation of Centrisys THK350 Sludge Thickeners will be the first of its kind in New Hampshire.
