Blow-Off System Flushes Dead End Water Mains

Water systems are saving money by using a new approach to flushing dead end water mains.

Water systems are saving money by using a new approach to flushing dead end water mains. Traditionally, many systems have used fire hydrants for flushing dead-ends, especially cul-de-sacs. Kupferle Foundry offers the Truflo #TF500 Blow-Off designed especially for flushing dead-end mains.

The #TF500 installs underground in a 51/4 inch valve box and is hidden from view. A portable riser is attached to the blow-off when flushing. The Truflo is non-freezing and available in any depth of bury. All of the working parts are brass and serviceable without digging.

Each unit can be specified with a sampling option, allowing sample collection through the blow-off without groundwater contamination risk. Extensions are never needed because the valve box is unattached to the blow-off and is adjustable.

By placing the Truflow on the dead-end, then placing the first fire hydrant 300' upstream, utilities can avoid problems associated with placing a hydrant in cul-de-sacs. Fire departments prefer this approach, allowing them to avoid crowded, small cul-de-sacs when fighting a fire.
